Portland Collection

Inspired by the original carriage doors on the craftsman homes around Portland – updated with the convenience of an overhead door.

Every Portland Carriage Collection Door is handmade using the finest materials, mortise & tenon joints, true divided lites, and custom made to order.

Born from a customer’s request nearly 30 years ago: “can you create an overhead door that looks like my old swinging carriage doors that need to be replaced?” So we got to work using what we had at the time—panel door materials—and created an arrangment that has all the charm of a traditional swinging carriage door, but with the functionality and conveince of an overhead door. That was in the Irvington neighborhood. From there we’ve created several different models based on motifs unique to the neighborhoods that our customers requested them from.

Construction

We start with kiln dried rails—hemlock finger-joint rails for paint-grade, or solid clear hemlock rails for stain-grade—and solid clear stiles. From there we assemble them piece by piece, insert the panels, evenly press them with 70 lbs. of pressure, and secure the frame with waterproof glue and heavy-duty galvanized fasteners.

Designs

Our designs depict each model as a typical single-car sized opening, meant to look like 2 swinging doors. For double-car doors, we move to a 4 door design. For doors that are in-between sizes, or special requests, we can do a 3 or 5 door design. Have something else in mind? Reach out to us and we’ll work with you to realize your vision.

Each arch we do is custom made and aesthetically optimized for each design & size, unless otherwise specified. For a specific arch request, a template must be provided to our team. On single-car doors, a single arch is standard. For double-car doors, you can choose between a single or double arch.

Glass

One of the unique things about the Portland Carriage Collection is the extra large glass section. The Portland Collection come standard with 1/8″ Clear DSB (Double Strength B-Grade) glass. Or, upgrade to an obscured, decorative, or colored option. For special requests, maximum glass thickness allowed is 3/16″.

Speifications

The Portland Carriage House Collection is equipped with heavy duty 15″ radius torsion hardware; track is 2″. 3″ track supplied when required by weight. Smooth & quiet nylon-steel rollers, non corrosive door fixtures and graduated 14ga hinges, double end hinges are standard on doors 16ft & up. All doors 12ft & up include one strut per section, 2-1/4″ or 3″ depending door width and weight. Backsheet reccomended on doors over 16ft in width to reduce sagging.

• Heavy-duty hardware box with nylon-steel ball-bearing rollers, 14ga hinges, and 2” carriage bolts
• 2″ heavy duty track (3” track reccomended on doors in excess of 12’ high or 65 lbs. per roller)
• 16ga torsion tube (11ga tube on doors over 10’ high, solid shaft & coupler recommended on doors over 12’ high)
• 22ga struts on doors 12’ wide and larger
